1. In the normal insert clocking position (position N), the insert centerline coincides with the centerline of the master keyway (key) of the shell: L = 0°.

2. In the alternate clocking positions (W, X, Y and Z), the pin insert (viewing from mating side) is rotated clockwise relative to the centerline of the master keyway (key) of the shell.

3. The socket insert is rotated counter-clockwise.

4. Plugs have keyways; receptacles have keys.
